Getting to St. Croix
St. Croix has one commercial airport: Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX), on the south side of the island. Everything arrives there.
Getting here from the mainland
A handful of U.S. carriers serve STX, with direct service concentrated on east-coast and southern hubs, plus connections through San Juan. Direct routes and frequencies shift by season — high season brings more nonstops, and some routes disappear in the autumn.
Two practical points:
San Juan is the workhorse connection. Short hop, frequent service, and it rescues most itineraries when a nonstop is not available on your dates.
Book the earliest reasonable arrival. Rental car counters, grocery stores and the drive to your villa are all easier in daylight, and if a connection fails you have the rest of the day to recover.
From St. Thomas
If you are already in the USVI, three options connect St. Thomas and St. Croix across the 40 miles of open water:
- Seaplane — harbour to harbour, Charlotte Amalie to Christiansted. The most scenic way to travel in the territory.
- Small aircraft — airport to airport, short hop.
- Ferry — runs on a limited schedule that changes; check current timetables before planning around it.
Landing at STX
For U.S. citizens arriving from the mainland it is a domestic arrival — no immigration, no customs on the way in. You will need REAL ID–compliant photo identification to have boarded; see do you need a passport for St. Croix.
Departing is the slower direction. Leaving the USVI for the mainland involves a U.S. Customs and Border Protection screening and an agricultural check. Allow more time than you would for a normal domestic departure.
Renting a car
Do it. There is no useful public transport for visitors and the island is spread out — the towns are 35–40 minutes apart and the good beaches are further still. Reserve ahead in high season; the fleet on a small island is finite and Christmas week does sell out.
You drive on the left in the U.S. Virgin Islands, generally in left-hand-drive American cars. It is disorienting for about an hour. Take the first drive slowly and be deliberate at roundabouts and junctions.
Airport to us
Our villa sits in the hills above the east end, roughly a 25–30 minute drive from STX depending on traffic through the middle of the island. We send arrival directions and smart-lock codes ahead of check-in, so there is no key handover to coordinate after a long travel day.
Airline routes, ferry schedules and rental availability change frequently — confirm current specifics with the carrier or operator when you book.
