Do you need a passport for St. Croix?

Updated August 16, 2026

If you are a U.S. citizen flying from the U.S. mainland, you do not need a passport to visit St. Croix. The U.S. Virgin Islands are an unincorporated U.S. territory. There is no immigration control on arrival.

You do need government-issued photo identification to fly. Since REAL ID enforcement took effect, that means a REAL ID–compliant driver’s licence, a passport, or another TSA-accepted document. If your licence does not have the star, bring the passport anyway.

The three catches

1. Leaving is different from arriving. Departing the USVI for the mainland, you pass through a U.S. Customs and Border Protection check. It is mostly about duty-free allowances and agricultural items — do not pack fresh fruit or plants. Build extra time into your departure.

2. Connecting flights. If your itinerary routes through a foreign airport, you need a passport for that leg regardless of the destination being U.S. territory. Check the whole routing, not just the last hop.

3. Not a U.S. citizen. Foreign nationals need the same documents they would need to enter the United States — a valid passport and, where applicable, a visa or ESTA. There is no separate USVI entry regime.

What you can safely leave at home

You will not need currency exchange — the U.S. dollar is the currency. U.S. mobile plans generally work as domestic service, though it is worth confirming with your carrier. U.S. postal service operates normally. Prescription medication rules are the same as any domestic trip.

What is worth bringing

A driving licence, if you plan to rent a car. You almost certainly should — the island is spread out and there is no useful public transport for visitors. Remember that the U.S. Virgin Islands drive on the left, usually in left-hand-drive American cars, which takes a few roundabouts to get used to.

One honest recommendation

Even though it is not required, travelling with a passport is not a bad habit. Flights get rerouted, plans change, and it removes an entire category of problem. But if yours has expired and your trip is next week — you are fine.

Entry requirements can change. This reflects the rules as generally applied to U.S. domestic territory travel; confirm current requirements with TSA and CBP before you fly.
