Frederiksted Pier
Frederiksted Pier is on the west coast of St. Croix, and by day it is an unremarkable working cruise pier. Underneath it is one of the strangest dive sites in the Caribbean.
Why it is good
Decades of concrete and steel pilings have become an artificial reef, and because the west coast is sheltered the water is calm and clear. What has colonised it is unusual: seahorses, frogfish, octopus, batfish, juvenile everything. It is a macro photographer’s site rather than a big-animal site — you go slowly and look closely.
Night dives here are the ones people talk about.
Access
Depends on cruise ship schedules. When a ship is in, the pier is closed to divers and snorkellers. Check locally on the day — dive shops in Frederiksted and on the north shore will know.
Snorkelling it
The water is shallow and calm enough that snorkellers see plenty from the surface, particularly around the shoreward pilings. It is one of the easier good-water entries on the island — you walk in from the beach beside the pier.
Combine it with
Frederiksted town — quieter than Christiansted, with the sunset side of the island and a handful of places to eat.
Rainbow Beach, a few minutes north, for calm water and a beach bar.
Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge to the south, when seasonal access allows.
Make it a west-end day: pier in the morning, lunch in town, Rainbow Beach for the afternoon, sunset from the west coast, drive back.
Practical
- Check ship schedules before driving over — it is ~40 minutes from Christiansted.
- Bring your own mask if you are fussy about fit.
- Reef-safe sunscreen.
- Empty your car at the beach car parks.
Frederiksted is about 50 minutes from our villa on the east end — it is the far corner of the island.
Common questions
Can you dive under Frederiksted Pier?
Yes, when no ship is in port. The pilings have become an artificial reef and the site is well known for seahorses, frogfish, octopus and other macro life. Local dive shops run it regularly.
Can you snorkel Frederiksted Pier?
Yes. The water is shallow and calm on the west side of the island, and much of the piling life is visible from the surface. Access depends on cruise ship schedules.
